Many people prefer to use composting bins rather than having a compost pile in their yard. There are indeed many advantages to using a bin for composting. First of all, many cities, communities and homeowner’s associations do not allow a compost heap but will allow bins. These bins are nicer looking than an ugly compost pile and definitely less likely to bring complaints from neighbors and family members.
As the bins are enclosed and above ground, they are resistant to rodents and other animals. Being enclosed also means they are relatively odor free as well. Bins keep the organic waste confined to just one area in your yard.
Composting bins also keep the pile hotter. The compost is piled inside the bin with the door closed; this keeps the heat in so the materials break down better. In a regular compost heap, the compost tends to spread out somewhat and the heat tends to stay in the middle of the pile. Bins are also simply easier to use. Some equate it to having a trash can rather than a trash heap. They are easier to move around making them more convenient and are more likely to be used.
Composting bins come in many styles and sizes ranging from simple wooden bins to multi-bin systems. You can even make your own. All things considered, a bin may be more practical and convenient for your home.
